Tweet Curation

The past five weeks I was required to live tweet alongside the sci-fi movie screenings as part of BCM325.

Due to enrolling in the subject late, I missed the screening for Metropolis, so there are no Tweets to feature about that movie.

Week 2-2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

During my first week of live tweeting, I quickly discovered that doing research prior to the screening would be beneficial to my tweeting. I did do some research during the film and was able to tweet, as well as interact, using relevant sources. However, majority of my tweets were based on my own thoughts and ideas inspired by the movie, and my interactions were mostly limited to retweets and likes.

Week 3-Westworld (1973)

This week I did some research and drafted tweets prior to the screening. I was able to then take information from a tweet I had drafted and pair it with a screenshot from a scene I was watching in real time, which not only helped me visualise the information I had learned, but it was an engaging moment between the movie and research.

However, I was unable to meet the ten tweet requirement. Although I did research this week, I did not prepare ten tweets, only five. Expecting myself to come up with tweets on the fly is not unrealistic, but I shouldn’t rely on it, so I will be planning out at least ten tweets before the screening. I think I had a good mix of researched tweets and relevant thoughts based on the movie, however preparing all ten tweets in case is the best case scenario.

My interactions did not improve this week, but I was able to provide relevant information to one peer.

Week 4-Blade Runner (1982)

This week I prepared all my tweets beforehand. I was able to use the same method I discovered last week of finding information and a connecting screen capture from the film to create my tweets. However, I quickly realised I was just info-dumping, with quotes but no reflection.

My interactions, on the other hand, were inspired. There were numerous discussions that I was able to engage in.

Week 5-Ghost in the Shell (1995)

This week my research involved a mix of the 1995 version and the 2017 version, which was a mistake on my part. However, I was able to easily adapt by going through links my peers had shared on Twitter and picking out my own points from them. I did not learn from last week’s mistakes and did more info-dumping, so I will need to take a more reflective approach to my next round of tweets.

I have a feminist take in my tweets and interactions, this week in particular, but I think they will be more relevant if I spoke about feminism in a futuristic context.

Overall, what I’ve learned is that researching prior to the screening is the best approach, but also allowing personal reflection that is relevant to the topic of the future is something I should work on.
