Feminines Update

Watch video at the bottom of the blog first.

My research has been taken from some of the subject readings, as well as my own articles and papers I have outsourced.

As seen in the video, I have three readings for paratext. Textual Analysis, Video Games, Zombies (Carr, 2009) has helped me to understand paratextual analyses, while Brown kids need more books (Arnsberger, 2019) and Why it’s so important for kids to see diverse TV and movie characters (Dobrow et al, 2018) discuss the importance of racial and ethnic diversity, particularly for kids.

For gender diversity, I was able to source four relevant readings. Newzoo’s Gamer Segmentation (Newzoo, 2021) provides insight into the distinction of male and female in the gaming community. The other three readings discuss how we need more respectful non-binary representation (Gemmil, 2020), transgender representation (Jobe, 2013), and general LGBTQ+ representation (Banks, 2009).

Lastly, for feminism, I have three readings I have been drawing my research from. The first is Gendered Media: The Influence of Media on Views of Gender (Wood, 2013) which unpacks the negative ways in which women have been represented in the past in media. Similarly, 3 Tired TV Tropes & 3 Shows That Toppled Them (Havrilesky, 2012) also discusses stereotypes and tropes in media that can be harmful if overused, however this article also covers negative representation of men. And finally, What Netflix’s ‘Winx Club’ Remake Gets Wrong About Fashion (Li, 2021) is a commentary on the common trope that women with style cannot also be powerful.
